Going High Carb to Get Leaner and Fitter

January 9, 2020 by Paul Marles Leave a Comment

Do you have days when you just can’t get anything done?

Do you lack motivation? Just want to sit and veg out?

Feeling lack of energy?

I do, many times. So do most people. Those that say they don’t are liars. It’s impossible to be running on full energy non stop every day. It’s like a Formula 1 car taking on a cross country trip. Running for hours.

They can’t, they blow a gasket or gearbox. They have to stop. Take check. Take charge. Then it’s back on the road.

The reason you feel like this is because you’re either running too hard, getting stressed and burning out. Or you’re putting in the wrong fuel. Like a racing car. Put in cheap unleaded petrol form your local garage and it won’t run.

You can’t expect your body to run on cheap fuel. Ready meals, junk foods, chips. You’ve got to put in the right fuel and then take regular rests. That means getting to bed at a reasonable time and getting 7 to 8 hours in.

I’ve been experimenting with getting up at 05.00 which means I need to get to bed at 22.00. Not enough rest and you’ll burn out. Just like putting the wrong fuel in.

Today I started an experiment with my diet. About 5 years ago I developed some form of allergy. My hands swelled up then I developed wheezing. Rather than running to the doctor I looked to find the cause. One thing I did was experiment with my diet.

I tried a vegan diet. I wanted my diet to be cleaner. i thought vegan might be the way to go. I’d read all about the benefits, especially after coming across a chap called Rich Roll. I read the book, followed his blog. Eventually I gave it a go.

The result – I felt like death, no energy, stomach rumbling, constantly feeling hungry. I would crave meat. I kept looking at my neighbors dog, licking my lips.

After 3 months I ditched it. The asthma symptoms persisted anyway.

Then I came across a guy called Harley at durianrider.com. I liked his energy and being a cyclist enjoyed his youtube channel. Nice eye candy on his vids too.

I largely ignored his vegan ravings but noticed his information wasn’t the normal vegan stuff. I watched a few more videos, moneyed up for his book and was intrigued although still skeptical.

What he wrote made sense and explained why I felt like shit before.

So I thought fuck it, here goes. Going to give it a try. Will coincide nicely with resurrecting the old steel Mercian bike I have stored in the garage.

I’ll start just replacing my breakfast and lunch with high cards and see how it goes.

The aim – lose weight and get fitter.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Here’s to you.
